North Huntingdon Township planners tabled a decision on a proposed strip mall across from the Wal-Mart development, and will consider a revised version of the plan next month.

The commission had issues with:

  • traffic patterns in and out of the proposed Huntingdon Marketplace
  • the size of the parking area so it could accommodate delivery trucks and fire engines
  • adhering to the township's shopping plaza ordinance regarding aesthetics and design appeal

The Tribune-Review has more on the proposed strip mall.

You have the problems of getting traffic under control, which they have a problem with now without the extra stores. Well lets start there=
Lets widen the road some more and put in some more intersections and stoplights. OK Now where is this money coming from to do this. From the stores? Who pays? From the township? Who pays? From the County? Who Pays? From the State? Who Pays? And the amount of money we get from the Federal government wouldn't be much by the time of route 30 project. Now lets get to the stores, where is there going to be parking for the stores in order for handicap persons to safely park, and in the case of an emergency, can a fire truck or ambulance fit thru the parked cars easy enough? You have to put yourself in that ambulance gurney, you don't want no excuses, you want picked up and the best ambulance care that's possible. Also you have firetrucks that have to get thru. Just talking parking lots how about going back out on Rt. 30 where we was a bit ago. All those lanes of traffic and maybe it is your house the firemen are trying to get to. What if someone robs you? The Police have to be able to get thru, traffic or parking lots, construction. The same as any emergency vehicle, power, water, sewer!
You have to look at the big picture, and the biggest one that SHOULD concern everyone is "SAFETY" first.

Not to be talking about seasonal items, like Pumpkins and 3 for $.99 super glue.

And so far as MikeP
I don't know why you let him talk like he did.
Is there no age limit to this site? That has to be the problem, because no respectable man would talk trash on carrieB like that!
You should have blocked it!!!
It's a shame you let scum like MikeP talk like that, to carrieB. I am really surprized!
Why don't you just put them in a boxing ring and let them kick each others butt?
But then again MikeP would back down from carrieB if they met face to face.
If he knew who he was talking to, I am sure little mikieP wouldn't be talking trash to carrieB!!

There is no doubt that NHT is growing, and there is nothing wrong with that. NHT has a lot to offer, but the growth has to be planned and the planning has to be smart. Wal-Mart could exist in the NHT just fine, regardless of it's economic impact. It could've been placed on the other side of the township (there is plenty of property there for sale) and would cause a lot less traffic issues. That still leaves issue with emergency services as well as public works and roads department. All will be running thin with a lot more to cover. Section of US 30 running through the township is already one of the worse stretches of the road in the state, and it's only going to be worse. If you think that the tax revenue from new development will cover the increase in expense, you are wrong, the tax will need to be increased. This already has been talked about in township meetings. We all are going to pay for Wal-Mart, in one way or another.
There is more that is being brought to the table by the development. Wal-Mart in N. Versailles will be changed to Sam's Club, which will leave the NHT Wal-Mart open for "shoppers". Some businesses in NHT already closed once the WM construction started, and there will be more to come. Pennsylvania Ave in Irwin is already a shortcut to get around the Turnpike exchange. This road was never meant for that amount of traffic, same goes for Barns Lake Rd, good luck getting to your brand new house.
Lastly, Wal-Mart does not have the lowest prices, the commercials will tell you they do but they really don't. There is a reason that they don't have weekly flyer showing their prices. They rather suck the shopper into believing they are the cheapest, then telling the real deal on paper. Of course since they will cause a traffic nightmare, it's not going to be worth driving anywhere to save money and aggravation… now that's smart planning on Wal-Mart's part.
