Norwin junior Ryan Smrekar made one final trip to the medal stand last week at the PIAA swimming championships at Bucknell University.
The standout swimmer placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle event after posting a time of 21.46 in the championship finals.
Jamie Grennan of Delaware Valley won the event with a time of 20.75. Smrekar, who won the WPIAL championship in the event last month, improved on his preliminary heat time of 21.49.
The junior also competed in the 100-yard freestyle and placed 19th with a time of 47.95 in the preliminary heat. He failed to qualify for the consolation finals.
In addition to Smrekar, freshman Jordan Van Winkle placed 27th in the 100-yard freestyle after a swim of 54.59 in the preliminary round.
"I thought both Ryan and Jordan did an outstanding job," coach Barb Augustin said.
"I thought they handled the pressure pretty well. It was the first time for both of them, but they have had big meet experience before. They got to see how competitive it is at state level and how 100th of a second can make a difference."
The duo's accomplishments earned them a place in Norwin history and set an example for future swimmers, Augustin said.
"They both accomplished many personal goals, which makes a season successful. It has been about 10 years since we have had a WPIAL champion at Norwin," she said.
"They have also served as an example to inspire the rest of the team. I feel what they have come away with from this season will only make them better swimmers in the future."
Wilson was awarded the boys team title in the Class AAA championships with a score of 117, while Emmaus won the girls team title with 212 points.
