The Irwin Main Street Program has received recognition as a 2008 National Trust for Historic Preservation Main Street Program.

The Washington, D.C.,- based trust awarded the honor to less than 800 communities in the nation.

Irwin Main Street is entering its second full year with a full-time manager. The program is funded by local donations, money from local businesses, the borough of Irwin and Irwin Bank and state funds.

In 2007, downtown Irwin had a net gain of three businesses. So far in 2008, one new business has moved in, with a second planning to open in the summer.

AARP elections

North Huntingdon AARP will meet May 1 in Mack Hall at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton church at 10:30 a.m.

Elections of officers for 2008 to 2009 will take place.

Members are asked to bring small soaps, shampoo, toothpaste, hand cream, costume jewelry, small stuffed animals and men's ball caps to be given as prizes for the bingo party at Westmoreland Manor.

Library program

Norwin Public Library will host Melinda Crawford, executive director of Preservation Pennsylvania, for a discussion of the Lincoln Highway in Pennsylvania on May 3 at 1 p.m.

The program is free and open to the public.

Crawford has worked in the field of historic preservation for 25 years. She has a special interest in the recent past, specifically roadside architecture and the Lincoln Highway.

Those interested may register for the talk by calling the library at 724-863-4700, ext. 103.

Car cruise lineup

Along with a myriad of classic cars and trucks, the Irwin Car Cruise will feature yet another celebrity.

Leon Daniels, formerly of the local singing group El Venos, will perform live at the Saturday car cruise on Main Street in Irwin.

The cruise, which is held from noon to 5 p.m., also will feature an appearance by the "Daddio of the Raddio" Porky Chedwick. Oldies music will fill the air under the watchful eye of "Big Daddy G" Georgeo of 103.9 WLSW-FM.

Participants can register their cars at the gate on Saturday for a cost of $10. Parking starts at noon with monitored entry at the intersection of Third Street and Main Street.
