The WPIAL Board of Control has announced the realignments for the winter sports for the the next two seasons.
The biggest change will be in wrestling.
The WPIAL has created a subdivision system that will result in the top two teams from the section's A division and B division facing off in a tournament at the end of the season to decide a section champion. All four will advance to the WPIAL playoffs.
Below is a look at how the changes will affect the three local schools:
Wrestling
The 10-team Section 1-AAA that featured Franklin Regional, Norwin and Penn-Trafford is a thing of the past. Section 1A will include Franklin Regional, Gateway, Kiski Area, Penn Hills and Woodland Hills.
Section 1B will consist of Derry Area, Latrobe, Indiana, Penn-Trafford and Plum.
Section 2B includes Elizabeth Forward, Greensburg Salem, Hempfield Area, McKeesport Area and Norwin.
Boys basketball
Franklin Regional no longer will compete with Norwin and Penn-Trafford in Section 1-AAAA.
The Panthers will move to Section 2-AAAA with Fox Chapel Area, Gateway, McKeesport, Penn Hills, Plum and Woodland Hills.
Girls basketball
Franklin Regional again will switch sections, heading to Section 1-AAA to play against Hampton, Highlands, Kittanning, Knoch, Mars and Valley. Norwin and P-T won't see any changes in Section 1-AAAA.
Swimming
All three local swim teams remained in their respective sections -- Norwin and P-T in Section 1 and FR in Section 3.
