The section title still is up for grabs as the Norwin Knights volleyball team heads into the final match of the season tonight, Thursday, against rival Penn-Trafford (6-4).

Norwin (9-1) started the final week of regular season play in first place but was trailed closely by Plum and Penn Hills, both 8-2.

Norwin was scheduled to travel to Plum on Tuesday, but results were unavailable at press time.

"(A section championship is) definitely an achievement that we would be proud of and have been working for since day one of practice," coach Al Warden said.

"We still have room for improvement, especially blocking and attacking with our middles. But our biggest problem all year has been making unforced errors. The goal from here on is to play hard and play smart."

Norwin picked up two more section wins last week over Gateway and Hempfield Area.

The Knights defeated Gateway, 3-0, with scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-14. Kill leaders were Cody Schropp with 10 and Matt Ferragonio with nine. A total of 11 players had kills during the match and serving was nearly perfect with just two serving errors all night.

Norwin followed that with a 3-1 win over Hempfield Area with scores of 25-17, 25-8, 20-25 and 25-15.

"We thought we were going to get out with an easy win, but Hempfield gained momentum early in game three, and we could never put a run together to catch them," Warden said.

In the other three games, Alex Dennison and Ferragonio were providing all the offense necessary with 11 and 16 kills on the night, respectively. Mike Schmidt added 11 service points.

Tonight's match against P-T will be at home, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The WPIAL playoffs are set to start on Tuesday.
