Bringing the Heat: Families unite for annual run to fight cancer

Sunday was a time to honor the women who brought us into the world.

With a family gathering over dinner, a well-wishing greeting card or a long-distance phone call, moms across the nation were recognized for all they've done for their loved ones over the years.

My Mother's Day began by being engulfed in a sea of pink at the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure in Schenley Park.

Thousands of Pink Warrior survivors and their friends and family members overwhelmed the park to help raise money to fight breast cancer, one of the leading causes of death among women.

Each year, it is a sight to see as the 5K run and walk begins, and tens of thousands of supporters for the cause make a dedicated trek through the course.

I saw many familiar student-athletes from the local area, as well as area parents, faculty members and coaches participating.

There were women of all ages dressed in their pink attire, signifying their battle with breast cancer.

Some were survivors and others continue their ongoing fight.

Dozens of sponsors lined the park perimeter offering their services to the emotional event, and hundreds of volunteers dressed in blue garb gave their time to make sure the annual event continued to be a blaring success.

More than 35,000 Pittsburghers participated in the race.

Overall, it was a great way to start off Mother's Day and witness the courage of these brave women on display.
