Bringing the Heat: A record day for the WPIAL

Saturday was the kind of afternoon when I wish cloning research was further along.

It was one of the busiest days of the year in the world of high school athletics, and what a day it turned out to be.

Saturday's list of activities included the WPIAL Class AAA diving championships, WPIAL Class AAA wrestling championships and a full slate of WPIAL basketball championship games at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

On the court, Terrelle Pryor continued to cement his place in the WPIAL history books by leading Jeannette to a district championship. His accomplishments nearly were trumped by seeing several teams win their first WPIAL hoops titles, as well.

Just a few miles away at North Allegheny, more history was taking place as the Franklin Regional diving team was putting on a show, as coach Gary Guadagnino said.

Leading the way was sophomore standout Samantha Pickens, who shattered a WPIAL record with a score of 542.25 en route to a diving championship. She'll be joined at states by fellow Panthers Ryan Koter, who place second, and Ed Deming, who was fifth.

Later, three local athletes continued their memorable seasons by remaining undefeated and capturing WPIAL wrestling titles.

Franklin Regional's Nico Megaludis, Penn-Trafford's Shane Young and Norwin's Mike Salopek each brought home a gold medal to Westmoreland County.

All of these athletes and teams will attempt to equal their WPIAL success at the state level in the coming weeks, but it will be tough to compare to Super Saturday.
