Magdelena Hellmann
Worked as a printer for Lach Printing

Magdelena D. Reuss Hellmann, 80, of Larimer, died March 6, 2008, in UPMC Presbyterian hospital, Pitts-burgh.

Born Sept. 13, 1927, in Larimer, she was a daughter of George and Clara Hoffman Reuss.

Before her retirement, she was employed as a printer for Lach Printing in Manor. She was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Irwin. Mrs. Hellmann enjoyed flowers and animals, especially cats.

Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Walter Hellmann; three children, James Hellman of Orrville Ohio, Michael Hellman of North Huntingdon and Sue Welesko and her husband, Ronald, of North Versailles; grandchildren, Jeremy and Keith Hellman and Kelly and Kevin Welesko; and siblings, Mary Fenton, Clara McElfresh, George Reuss and Patricia Lach.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Elsie Mack and Eva Tuskan; and a daughter-in-law, Kathy Hellman.

Friends were received at Joseph F. Ott Funeral Home Inc., Irwin. Interment was at Long Run Cemetery, North Huntingdon. Memorial donations are suggested to the Humane Society of Westmoreland County, P.O. Box 1552, Greensburg, PA 15601.

Roy Thorpe
Worked at U.S. Steel

Roy F. Thorpe, 92, of Greensburg, died March 4, 2008, in Heartland Hospice House.

Born May 9, 1915, in Perryopolis, he was the son of Edwin and Clara Freed Thorpe.

Mr. Thorpe retired from U.S. Steel Edgar Thomson Works after more than 40 years of service.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Julia Toth Thorpe; second wife, Sally Thorpe; and siblings, Mary, John, Tilghman, Edwin and Frank Thorpe, Eva Rebecca Bell, Phoebe Workman and Esther Patterson.

Surviving are his children, Roy S. Thorpe of East McKeesport, Arlene Gelston of Bridgeville, James Thorpe of Hagerstown, David Thorpe of Elizabeth Township and Joseph Thorpe of North Huntingdon; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Woodward; and nieces and nephews, including special nephew, Oral Ullam.

There was no viewing. Private interment was at Westmoreland Memorial Park.

A suggestion for memorial contributions is the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

William Snyder Funeral Home in Irwin was in charge of arrangements.

Gloria Klaus
Great-grandmother

Gloria J. Klaus, 66, of Irwin, died March 5, 2008.

Born Feb. 19, 1942, in North Braddock, she was a daughter of George and June McCutch-eon Klaus.

She was a mother of nine children who enjoyed her family and grandchildren, bingo and traveling.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Meighan; and siblings, Samuel, Bernice, Jerry and Dennis Klaus.

Surviving are her children, Philip (Sherry) Meighan of Greensburg, Donald Meighan of Irwin, Michael Meighan of Greensburg, Cynthia (Terry) Gutzburg of California, John (Carol) Meighan of Pittsburgh, Theresa Meighan of Freeport, Gloria Bertstresser of Kansas, Jessica Snyder of Irwin and Regina Pawlowski of Arizona; 23 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Rebecca Waggoner, Diane Pupich and June Goodwin.

A memorial service was held at William Snyder Funeral Home, Irwin.

Ellen Damor
Emerald Club member

Ellen Damor, 93, of North Huntingdon, died March 8, 2008.

Born March 15, 1914, in East Pittsburgh, she was a daughter of Michael and Rose Pekic Damor.

Mrs. Damor was a member of St. Agnes Church in North Huntingdon and its Emerald Club and the Slovenian Heritage Association.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Damor; and three sisters, Dorothy Damor, Catherine Tylavsky and Anna Damor.

Surviving are nieces, Carole Tylavsky and Janet Voyna; and a grandniece, Christine Miller.

Friends were received at James W. Shirley Funeral Home Inc., North Huntingdon. Mass was celebrated in St. Agnes Church.

Julia Menchio
Girl Scout Council VP

Julia B. Kunkle Painter Menchio, 100, a resident of Redstone Highlands in Greensburg, died March 4, 2008.

Born July 10, 1907, in Wilkinsburg, she was the daughter of Alpheus and Grace DeFrance Kunkle.

She graduated from Curry Business College in 1926. Mrs. Menchio had worked as a secretary for the Pittsburgh Branch of Cooper Gas Engine Co. of Grove City. In 1934, she was appointed district chairwoman and vice president of the Girl Scout Council of Westmoreland County.

Before World War II, she managed Meadow Gold Delicatessen on Fourth Street in Irwin. She worked as a supervisor for the Rehabilitation and Sheltered Workshop in Greensburg and was an employee of the Bethesda Home for Juvenile Girls in Meadville. She was a member of and pianist for the Senior Center of Greensburg.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph Painter; second husband Louis Menchio; a son, Joseph Dwaine Painter; a grandson, Donald Joseph Painter and siblings, Carl and William Kunkle, Grace McEndarfer and Jeanne Bair.

Surviving are a sister, Ruth Loughner; a niece, Ruth Diffenderfer and her husband, Dennis, all of Irwin; a nephew, Joe Loughner of Tulsa, Okla.; daughter-in-law, Louise Painter of Belle Vernon; granddaughters, Poly Babik and Suzanne Gazda; and two great-stepgrandchildren, Brianna and Frank Babik.

Friends were received at William Snyder Funeral Home, Irwin, where a service was held with the Rev. Ronald Wakeman officiating.

Interment was at Union Cemetery, North Huntingdon.

Joseph Clark
Worked at Westinghouse

Joseph D. Clark, 92, of North Huntingdon, died March 8, 2008, at Metron in Belding, Mich.

Born March 31, 1915, in Pittsburgh, he was a son of Thomas and Catherine Tahaney Clark. Before retirement, he worked for Westinghouse Electric in East Pittsburgh. Mr. Clark was a World War II Air Force veteran.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Kathleen Nelson Clark; brothers, Francis, Thomas, Charles and Gerald Clark; and a sister, Genevieve Clark. Surviving are his son, Joseph D. Clark of Belding, Mich.; and three grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, at James W. Shirley Funeral Home, North Huntingdon. Interment will be at Ligonier Valley Cemetery on Thursday.

Ida Mae Smith
Private-duty nurse

Ida Mae Smith, 86, of Irwin, died March 9, 2008, at Mountainview Specialty Care Center, Greensburg.

Born Aug. 19, 1921, in Cambria County, she was the daughter of Harry and Agnes Haggerty Bell.

Before her retirement, she was employed as a private-duty nurse. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Conamaugh Valley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Smith; and sisters, Gloria Gaston and Kathleen Dunlevy.

Surviving are her sons, Harry Smith and his wife, Donna, of Irwin and Larry Smith of Pittsburgh; grandchildren, Glenn Smith and Virginia Smith Slyman; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at James W. Shirley Funeral Home, North Huntingdon. A service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel. Private interment will be at Twin Valley Memorial Park.

Eleanor Galensky
Great-grandmother

Eleanor Mae Galensky, 76, of Rillton, died March 7, 2008, in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg.

Born June 28, 1931, she was a daughter of Ralph and Rose Paugh Miller. Mrs. Galensky was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church in Herminie. She loved to cook.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Galensky Sr.; a son, Stanley Galensky Jr.; sister, Sally Nicholson; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Galensky Masser of Rillton; a son, Bernard Galensky of Shafton; three granddaughters, Pam Jubec, Tammy Lynn Galensky and Hope Galensky; a great-granddaughter; a sister, Katy Miller; a brother, Jim Miller; and a sister-in-law, Inez Galensky.

Friends were received at Joseph F. Ott Funeral Home Inc., Irwin. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Edward Catholic Church, Herminie. Interment was at West Newton Cemetery.

Charles Ickes
Railroad foreman

Charles E. Ickes, 86, of Westmoreland City, died March 8, 2008, in UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh.

Born March 16, 1921, in Bedford, he was a son of Frank and Lou Lou Lehman Ickes.

Before retirement, he was a foreman for Conrail railroad, and was also employed as a mechanic for Hamilton Buick in North Huntingdon.

Mr. Ickes was a lifetime member of the LOOM 236, and member of Sons of the American Legion 359, Veterans of Foreign Wars 781, Italian Miners Society of Hahntown, Penn Rod & Gun Club and firemen's clubs in Shafton, Westmoreland City, North Irwin, New Alexandra and Larimer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ickes; and two grandsons, Michael Paul Ickes and John Joseph Ickes.

Surviving are seven children, Barbara Mae (Frank) Ickes Palmer of Utah, Betty Jane (Arnold) Schmidt of Penn, Howard (Lou Ann) Ickes of Irwin, James (Julie) Ickes of Conflunce, Raymond (Mary Ann) Ickes of Virginia Beach, Nancy Louise (Richard) Cline of Penn and Patricia (Lee) Critchlow of Herminie; friend and companion, Barbara Kunkle; and more than 50 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Joseph F. Ott Funeral Home Inc., Irwin. A service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Clifton Suehr officiating.

Interment will follow at Westmoreland County Memorial Park.

Edith Rossiter
Employed at Irvin Works

Edith Ruppert Rossiter, of Hampton, formerly of Whitehall, died March 4, 2008.

Born in Masontown, she was the daughter of William and Eliza Hurst Ruppert.

Mrs. Rossiter graduated from Norwin High School in Irwin and attended Duff's Business Institute. Before her marriage, she was employed at the Irvin Works of U.S. Steel Corp., West Mifflin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Davis Rossiter; and two brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are her children, Amy Crist of Hampton and William D. Rossiter Jr. of North Potomac, Md.; and grandchildren, Ross W. II and Emma Crist and William D. III and Max Rossiter.

Friends were received at John F. Slater Funeral Home. A service was held in Whitehall Presbyterian Church. The family suggests contributions to Whitehall Presbyterian Church, 4935 East Willock Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227.
