Leonard Eugene Demalon Jr.
Leonard Eugene Demalon Jr., 73, of Elizabeth, died Sept. 29, 2009.
He was born April 25, 1936, in Elizabeth, and was a son of the late Leonard E. and Dina (Francesconi) Demalon.
He graduated from Elizabeth High School in 1954 and St. Vincent College in 1958.
He played football for St. Vincent College of Latrobe where he earned the distinction of Small College All American, and was drafted by the Baltimore, Colts.
He went to graduate school at Duquesne University and graduated from Certified Medical Representative School for Pharmaceuticals Representative out of Richmond Virginia. He earned the title of certified medical representative.
He taught and coached football at Chartiers-Houston, and at Glassport High School. He was both assistant and head coach. He also was the athletic director while at Glassport High School. He was the first head coach at St. Agnes School of North Huntingdon, grades seven and eight, where he won two championships in six years. He was an assistant coach at St. Edward School of Herminie, and won a championship there, too.
He was employed by Sandoz, (Navartis) as a pharmaceuticals sales representative. He retired after 30 years of service and achieved Senior Sales Professional and many other awards.
He was a member of the St. Vincent Alumni Association. He was a life member of the Hecla Sportsman's club of Hecla; a 25-year member of Anglers Club of Clairton; and a member of the Shaner Sportsman's Club.
While his children went to Greensburg Central Catholic High School he was a member of, and is a past president of, the Fathers Club, now the Parents Club. He refereed basketball for St Agnes third- and-eighth grade teams at Hillcrest and Norwin Junior High East and West. He was a member of the Valley View Drive Card Club.
He loved to hunt and fish with his son, read and play the slots. He also enjoyed horse racing.
Surviving are his wife of more then 50 years, Marie (Bartko) Demalon; four children, Cheryl Yurek and her husband, Larry, of the North Hills, Mark Demalon and his wife, Carol, of Herminie, Lisa Alessandro and her husband, Ross, of North Huntington, and Stephanie Demalon of North Irwin; a son-in-law, Jerry Carroll of Aiken, S.C.; a sister, Shirley Julian of Fairless Hills; a brother, Thomas Demalon of Batesville, Ind; and 10 grandchildren, Jeremy, Jason and Justin Weiss, Jacqueline Demalon, Anne, Dina and Jerry Carroll and Brittany, Nicco and Antonio Alessandro.
His daughter, Patricia Carroll, preceded him in death.
Visitation was at James W. Shirley Funeral Home, North Huntingdon. A Mass of Christian Burial was at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Irwin.
Bobby Z. Knox
Bobby Z. Knox, 77, of North Huntingdon, died Oct. 4, 2009, at Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg.
Mr. Knox was born April 30, 1932, in Salt Lick, Ky., and was a son of the late Walter and Myrtle Knox.
He was a Korean War Army veteran.
Before retirement, he worked for U.S. Steel's National Tube Division as an inspector with 37 years of service.
Mr. Knox was a member of the McKeesport Sportsmen's Club.
He loved the outdoors, camping, fishing, hunting and traveling.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Louise Knox; a son, Craig V. Knox and his wife, Denise, of Greensburg; a daughter, Karen Fox of West Mifflin; five siblings, Bette Knox of Florida, Walter Thomas Knox of Houston, Shannon Exline of North Carolina, Peggy Kopke of Florida, and Beverly Bartholomew of Florida; five grandchildren, Becky Fox, Molly Fox and Jason Fox Sr., and Kaitlin and Nicole Knox; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Larry Meinen.
Visitation was at the James W. Shirley Funeral Home, clay Pike, North Huntingdon. A funeral service will be held, today, Thursday, at the funeral home today at 10 a.m. with, his brother-in-law the Pastor Ronald Exline officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Penn Lincoln Memorial Park, North Huntingdon.
Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army or a charity of the donor's choice.
Mary (Toth) Witkowski Hatt
Mary (Toth) Witkowski Hatt, 93, of North Huntingdon, formerly of East Pittsburgh, died Oct. 3, 2009.
She was born Sept. 4, 1916, in East Pittsburgh.
Surviving are four children, Mary Lou Payne and her husband, John, Lou Witkowski and his wife, Pat, of Maryland, and Bob Witkowski and his wife, Charlene, and Allen Witkowski and his wife, Carol, all of Arizona; a sister, Magdalene Repic of Wilmerding; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Her husbands, Lucian Witkowski and William Hatt, preceded her in death.
There was no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home, East Pittsburgh, is handling arrangements.
Marie T. Bickerstaff
Marie T. (Curry) Bickerstaff, 92, of Painterstown, died Sept. 26, 2009, at home.
She was born Feb. 8, 1917, in Altoona, and was a daughter of the late George S. and Violet Waite Curry.
Before retirement in 1980, she worked in the credit department of Joseph Horne Co. in the Greengate Mall. She previously worked at Altman's Feed Mill.
Mrs. Bickerstaff was a member of Paintertown Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Pythian Sisters, where she served as treasurer for 50 years.
Surviving are her husband of 72 years, Samuel C. "Tony" Bickerstaff; three children, Curtis Bickerstaff and his wife, Naomi, of Telford, Carolyn Stofko and her husband, Ralph, of Irwin, and Carole Slade of North Huntingdon; seven grandchildren, Paul Bickerstaff of Richland Township, Jodi Heiser of Telford, Jeffrey Shields of North Irwin, Richard and Thomas Shields, both of Irwin, Tami Lynn Slade-Kimm of Virginia and Daniel Slade of Arizona; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, June Bennette of Youngwood; and nieces and nephews.
Three siblings, Chester and Bill Curry and Maybelle Kelly; a granddaughter, Terri L. Shields; and a son-in-law, Daniel Slade, preceded her in death.
Visitation and services, officiated by the Rev. Dorothy Worth, were at the William Snyder Funeral Home, Irwin. Interment was in Union Cemetery, North Huntingdon.
