Roundup: Knights baseball squad gets better of Connellsville
The Norwin baseball team picked up a much-needed victory in the middle of a rugged stretch of four games in four days last week.
The Knights defeated section foe Connellsville, 13-6, on Thursday after suffering losses to Gateway, 13-3, on April 22, and Hempfield Area, 5-3, on April 23. Norwin also fell to Pine-Richland on Friday, 9-3.
Against Connellsville, Norwin (6-7, 3-4) picked up eight runs in the first two innings to cruise to victory. Senior hurler Bob Martin earned the win on the mound. He was helped by doubles from seniors Nick Miller and Matt Griffith and sophomore Dylan Brooks.
Norwin's game against Albert Gallatin on Monday was postponed due to rain. The Knights were scheduled to play at Franklin Regional yesterday, Wednesday, but results were unavailable at press time.
Next up for the local team will be a home test today, Thursday, against Connellsville, at 4 p.m.
Softball
The Lady Knights were dealt three losses last week to fall to 3-10 overall and 3-8 in Section 1-AAAA.
Prior to Tuesday's scheduled game with Latrobe, Norwin was in fifth place behind Latrobe (11-0), Connellsville (8-4), Hempfield Area (6-6) and Albert Gallatin (4-7).
The Lady Knights will wrap up the section season today, Thursday, at Penn-Trafford (2-9), at 4 p.m.
After falling to Albert Gallatin, 8-0, on April 22, Norwin dropped an 11-3 decision to Connellsville on Thursday and a 2-1 non-section tally to Gateway on Friday.
Against Connellsville, Norwin had six hits but committed eight errors as Courtney Morton suffered the loss on the mound. Norwin got a double from senior Jackie Spoljarick.
