Suggestion to open all mail a closed case

An attempt to have all mail arriving at the North Irwin borough building opened by the secretary, even if addressed to a specific person, failed to pass council.

The action introduced by Councilwoman Kim Macalus and board President Edwin "Bo" Anthony began in answer to a piece of mail addressed to former council President Gordon Stoves that was taken home and opened.

The correspondence asked for final reconciliation of past borough grants, according to discussion at Monday's meeting. Anthony took offense to Stoves having the letter.

Anthony wanted the board to OK having all mail, unless clearly marked "confidential," opened by the borough's part-time secretary.

The idea was not well received by council members nor residents in attendance and failed to get a second when placed in motion.

It was suggested, but not acted upon, to place individual receptacles in the office for mail separation.

It was not made clear whether Anthony wanted mail addressed to police, tax collector or the sewage authority, which also arrives at 21 Second St., to also be opened by the borough secretary. He also did not say who would then read and respond to the incoming mail.
