Trash bills to increase next year

North Huntingdon residents will pay 77 percent more for garbage collection in 2009, according to the terms of a new contract with Waste Management.

Township commissioners last week awarded a two-year contract for residential and commercial solid waste and recycling services to Waste Management, the low bidder. The Leger Road firm will replace County Hauling as residential collector and Allied Waste as commercial hauler.

The agreement will include an option to renew the contract for an additional two years.

The monthly cost per household will be $15.92 in 2008 and $16.56 the next year, said Kelly Wolfe, township manager. If the commissioners opt to extend the contract, the fee will increase to $17.37 a month and $18.07 a month in years three and four.

"We were anticipating an increase but until the time of the bid opening, we did not know," Wolfe said. "Many contracts around the region have seen a substantial increase."

The rate charged by County Hauling this year was $8.58 a month until a fuel surcharge boosted the fee to $9.38, Wolfe said.

Under the new contract, senior citizen head of households age 65 and older can utilize a sticker program in which they pay $1 per tagged garbage bag. The current rate is 60 cents per bag.

The rates for commercial pickup will also increase but vary depending upon the containers.

There will be a few changes with the new residential contract, including weekly recycling pickup instead of every other week.

Residents will receive 12 stickers a year that must be attached to bulky items. Those who have additional bulky pickup items or who have special hauling needs will have to contact the company for prices, Wolfe said.

Is that high or what!

Wow !! That's not just a little increase, that's highway robbery. I wonder if our wonderful commissioners will pay the same as us, or will they get a discount for signing this lousy contract.

Let's see if I got this right. County Hauling (a trash company that took just about everything that got put in trash) raised it's monthly charges from $8.58 to $9.38, a 75 cent increase. So lets go out and get some new estimates. Good thinking comissioners, we don't want "County Hauling" ripping us off since they raised our rates a whopping 75 cents a month.
Let's look at the "Lowest bidder", Waste Management. Their new rates will be $15.92 in 2008 and $16.56 the year after. That's an increase of $6.54, good deal! Oh yes, I almost forgot to mention,
"If the commissioners opt to extend the contract, the fee will increase to $17.37 a month and $18.07 a month in years three and four."
I must admit I'm getting old but not stupid! How is this possible? Did County Haulings' bid and if so, what was their new rate?
One more thing, " Residents will receive 12 stickers a year that must be attached to bulky items. Those who have additional bulky pickup items or who have special hauling needs will have to contact the company for prices, Wolfe said."
Lucy, I need some 'splaining????

I think County Hauling sucks! And I loved WM when we had them. BUT to pay that much is CRAZY!!! I think WM is getting back at us for droping them! If County Hauling is going to keep the rates the same I say stick with the cheap guys! Next we will find people dumping along roads. Because there is going to be people out there that can't pay this amount! Why is it everything is going up but my pay check!
